CUNA SAN MATEO

CENTER • INITIATIVES • COMMUNITY

Geography & Climate

The property on which this life project is being realized is located on a gentle mountain slope in the highlands of the southern Sierra Madre (2,380 m above sea level), in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, near the 1000-inhabitant community of San Mateo Rio Hondo.

Arrival to San Mateo

Arriving from the COAST

Whichever airport or coastal Oaxacan location is chosen as a stopover, to get to San Mateo, one must take a coach or taxi to the town of Pochutla , and from there take one of the "Collectivos" transportation companies - either "Lineas Unidas" (recommended) or "Atlantidas" – or a private taxi to make the trip up into the mountains.

Of course, you can also arrive in your own car or hire a car. The roads are in good condition and there is usually little traffic

The ticket costs between 120 and 150 per person from Pochutla to Zapotitlan or San Jose  Pesos, journey time approx. 3.5 hours.

A NOTICE:
For the drive from the coast up into the mountains, we recommend eating little or nothing beforehand, as the route is very winding (however, the road is in very good condition and the collectivos are modern Mercedes buses).

Arrival from Oaxaca city

To travel from Oaxaca City (capital of the state of the same name) to San Mateo, we also recommend the "Collectivos" of the companies "Lineas Unidas" or "Transportes Atlantidas".

These leave Oaxaca City in the direction of Pochutla every 30 minutes. Exit would then be, as described above, either in San Jose del Pacífico or at the fork in Zapotitlan.

Arrival from San Mateo to the Cuna

To get to the Cuna from the center of San Mateo, you can either take the 30-40 minute walk or a mototaxi (about 50 pesos) or taxi. The drivers know the way...just ask for the Rancho Cuna.

Welcome to the Cuna San Mateo!

General information on entry
to Mexico (airway)

The highlands are a mountain range approx. 100 km wide between the central high plateau of Oaxaca to the north and the coastal region of the Pacific that borders on the south. It rises to a height of approx. 3000 m and then drops steeply towards the coast.

From San Mateo you can drive north in about 3.5 hours to the colorful capital Oaxaca of the state of the same name.

In 2.5 hours to the south you can reach the wonderful Pacific coast of Oaxaca with its wonderful beaches, bays, fishing villages and lagoons. The proximity to these tropical coastal areas make this region so attractive.

About Oaxaca City
There is also the option of traveling to Oaxaca City on a domestic flight or by coach, and then continuing the journey to San Mateo from there (perhaps only after a small or large stopover).

You can also enter the desired destination airport on the coast directly into Skyscanner (eg Munich - Huatulco), then both the long-haul and the onward flights will be displayed as a bookable chain.

A NOTICE

For ALL flight bookings, especially for long-haul flights, we recommend taking out travel cancellation insurance in the event of illness! Especially in times like these.

Good Trip!

Bien Venidos a la Cuna San Mateo !!
